Our Choice

I have a question for all you people in the United States. When will George Bush stop sending people to war? And why doesn't he go to war himself?

I'm thinking in the future when people are going to be tired of fighting and being in war! I think people should decide on whether they would like to fight or whether they wouldn't want to fight. I think when we are in the future people are gonna want to give up instead of fight.

People are going to remember when their fathers had died in war and when their father's father had died, and this will go on and on they'll remember that, and they know who they will blame.

My grandpa was in the Army but he chose to do that because he knew it was best for his country and the people he loved.

George Bush shouldn't decide for us even if it's his job. We the people of the United States should decide by ourselves, and I believe this!

Dear Frenzy, as your

Dear Frenzy, as your classmate I support your opinion. But the part I know won't happen is Bush might not have time to even read your story because there is new people getting elected to be El Presidentae! But he might. Or the new president might even do that. But you never know, so keep in mind that it might change. Ones words can change the world.

Dear Frenzy, This is very

Dear Frenzy,

This is very powerful and I admire your bravery in sharing your thoughts and concerns. A few things to think about...

A country's president probably shouldn't go to war because they would be a huge target and it would cause great chaos in the country if he/she were killed. President Bush does visit troops at war, though. And he personally visits with the troops and the families of those at war.

The Americans fighting have all chosen their jobs. No one made them join the military. There has been no draft in this current war, which means every man and woman that was sent knew when they took the job that they might end up at war.

You said your grandpa was in the Army and that he was there because he chose to do what was best for his country and the people he loved. I can tell you without a doubt that many of the Americans actually doing the fighting also do so with pride in their country and their job. Some people may not be happy about being sent to war, but don't assume everyone fighting thinks they shouldn't be at war. Many of them believe they are doing a good thing.

Remember that George Bush was elected and part of the president's job is to make decisions for us as a country. It would be a very difficult country to live in if every decision made was put up for a vote by all of the people. This is why we elect people to the positions they hold. They are supposed to represent all of us. And when they don't, we should vote for someone new in that office.

I appreciate that you do not agree with President Bush's decisions. I do at least *want* to believe that the president has our best interests at heart. But I, too, am very tired of the war and hope and pray that it ends soon. I have lost people that I love in this war.

Keep thinking. It's refreshing to hear that a student your age is interested in world events and has an important and thoughtful position to share.

Dear Frenzy, Keep at it. If

Dear Frenzy,
Keep at it. If enough people, young and old, expressed the feelings you wrote about, we would be living in a very different world right now. Never give up hope. Listen to and learn from those you trust. But also be willing to change your mind when somebody has a better idea (not always so easy!). Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and keep writing!
