Athens and Attika

By Debby - Posted on 22 February 2008

Athens was the largest city in ancient Greece. The land around Athens was called Attika. Athens controlled Attika. Athens and Attika had lots of mountains, seas, and valleys that were very fertile. Farmers grew olives, fruit, and grains. They raised livestock like pigs and sheep. Athens became very rich because of Attika's supply of lead, silver, and marble. But not everyone lived in the city. Some people lived on farms and seas. Athens also has really pretty buildings. The prettiest in Greece.

Athens was a city that was ruled by the people. This is called a democracy. Only men could be citizens. Any citizen had the right to speak and vote freely. Public debates decided how the city was run.

I hope to learn more about Athens and Attika.

I found this info at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ancientgreece/athens/citya.shtml
