exxon

I have recently learned about the disaster of the Exxon Valdez.

Alaska is a place of roaring beauty. Wildlife move around every corner. That is, until that fateful March morning in 1989. The oil spilt, and that was the end of it. The environment was severely damaged. Thousands of animals of Alaska died. The bald eagle's population nearly divided by two. Thousands of birds died from licking their feathers to clean themselves. Hundreds of sea otters died because they licked their fur. Because of this tragedy, Exxon should pay punitive damages because they were responsible.

Sewards Day

Seward's day is to remember the signing of the Alaska purchase treaty on March 30, 1867. William Henry Seward signed it. He was the secretary of the United states. He was once a governor of New York and a United States senator. He was born in Florida, New York. He studied law in college. His wife's name was Frances Miller. In 1850, he said," There is a higher law than the constitution." He continued to argue about this for ten years. He fought to buy Alaska from Russia. He bought it for 7.2 million dollars on March 30, 1867. That is why we celebrate Seward's day on the last Monday in March.

Global warming facts

The atmosphere traps heat.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.

The earth's climate has been changing for 5 billion years.

Scientists think that the sea is getting higher because melting glaciers add more water to the sea.

Humans started to add lots of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere in the Industrial Revolution.

Riding in your car sends greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

scientists study sediments, ice, and tree rings to learn more about past climate.

The Exxon Valdez

The Exxon Valdez oil spill happened on March 24, 1989. The ship hit a reef and about 240,000 barrels of oil spilled out into Prince William Sound. It also was collected by the rocks. By the next day, the oil had spread from 6 square miles to more than 18 square miles. By March 28, the oil had already spread more than 40 miles from the original spill. This effected more than the seas on the coast of Alaska, but it also killed a lot of marine life. Seals who licked their fur after being in the water, died because it poisoned them.

Athens and Attika

Athens was the largest city in ancient Greece. The land around Athens was called Attika. Athens controlled Attika. Athens and Attika had lots of mountains, seas, and valleys that were very fertile. Farmers grew olives, fruit, and grains. They raised livestock like pigs and sheep. Athens became very rich because of Attika's supply of lead, silver, and marble. But not everyone lived in the city. Some people lived on farms and seas. Athens also has really pretty buildings. The prettiest in Greece.

Amazing Sisters

Amazing Sisters

I have five sisters, so I know a lot about having them. One thing I know about them is that they can be really nice or they can be really mean, or both. Sometimes I fight with them, but sometimes they are very fun though.

One thing that I like about sisters is that you can put make up on them and you can paint their nails. And you can not do that to brothers, trust me(unless you are trying to make them look funny).

The Magic Problem

One day I was at the park with my friend, Lisa, and we were going to go down the slide. As I stepped on to the slide, I saw a necklace. I recognized it. It was my friend Abby's. She lived next door to me.

I told Lisa, "We should bring it to her house to return it to her after we are done at the park." She agreed.

The necklace had a locket that was shaped like a bottle. The bottle was green with little gold specks. I opened it up....and a genie popped out of it.

mummies

Mummies By Debby

The Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead so the soul would not die. Ba was the personality. He had a bird body and a human head. Ka was the life source, and needed food and water.

Egyptian food

Egypt was very dry, and relied mostly on the Nile River to water the crops, so the Egyptians could only grow certain kinds of food. Mainly they grew wheat and barley. The Egyptians made the wheat into bread and into soup and porridge.

For dessert, the Egyptians liked to eat dates. Dates were put into somebody's grave for them to eat in the next world, and which were preserved in the dry climate for three thousand years until archaeologists dug them up again.

Hawaii

My family and I are going to Hawaii in February. I can not wait!

Cargo Net

This week in school. we got to climb up a cargo net in gym. It is very fun. The cargo net is a big yellow grid made of rope. I would say that it is about 25 feet tall. Two people stand by the rope, holding onto the horizontal sides. Then two people climb up the net, as high as they can go, and If you fall it hurts. Sade' got almost to the top, then her hand slipped, and she went rolling down the cargo net, onto the big, blue, mat. She is glad those were there. I can not wait till we use the net again.

So unfair and the chocolate factory

You have heard the saying," Life's not fair," right, well I have a story that seemed just not fair at the time. But then I learned that things that you think are not fair, sometimes actually are.

Island of the Blue Dolphins

The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O' Dell is about a girl named Karana who encounters a Aleut ship which sends every one into shock. The people on this ship decide to camp at Karana's island and kill some otters. Then before they left, they attacked the men on the island, leaving only about 14 behind. The villagers decided to travel to California, which is a long way away from the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Sadly, Karana and her little brother, Ramo, were left behind by accident on the island.

Waiting for a Puppy

Soon we are going to get a new puppy. It is going to be a English bulldog puppy. They are very ugly. The one we are getting has a C on its back. It is very cool. We're going to have to name it with a name that starts with a Z, because that is our tradition. If you have any suggestions for a name that starts with z, leave it in a comment.

Math 2

Remember Math For Smarty Pants from Math 1? Well here is another cool puzzle from that book.

Here is the puzzle! Can you explain why half of eight might be 3 or 0? Answer

My Sister Mckinley

My little sister, Mckinley, is awesome. She is six and is in the first grade. At school she likes math and spelling. She hates homework! She has two best friends. Their names are Clara and Roman. Clara is one year younger than Mckinley, but she goes to our church. Roman is a boy who plays with Mckinley at recess. Clara is in kindergarten and Roman is in first grade like Mckinley.

math

I read a book called Math For Smarty Pants. It has lots of great puzzles.

Music 2

I love music. My favorite songs are "Our Song", Mary's Song, You're Beautiful, and Me Love. My favorite singers are Taylor Swift and Sean Kingston. Other singers I like are Carrie Underwood and Rihanna. I like country music because it is less fast and in my opinion, it sounds better. I also like some " R & B". I also like some pop music. I like Miley Cyrus. My favorite song by her is called "Right Here." I like Hannah Montana some, but only one song right now called Rockstar.

The School and Life Connection

School is fun. You get to learn interesting things you have never thought of before. You get to see things beyond bird's eye view. You learn how you see things, and learn how you see them in a different perspective.

You are able to meet new people, and learn how your brain reacts to them. You wonder why you do the things you do. You think why 2x7=14. But most of all, you learn to use your brain to do things more than possible. And that is the most important thing in the world.

When I almost got arrested

When I went to Juneau, with my family when I was six, we had to stop in Canada. When we were in Canada, my sisters, Kylie and Karliegh, and I got out of the car, and we skipped to the sidewalk in front of the hotel we were staying at. Then we skipped on the sidewalk. It was fun.

We kept skipping, then we saw these two guys in police-looking uniforms coming up to us.

"You're under arrest," they said as we stared in fear," for skipping on Canadian sidewalks."

"We can let you slide if you promise we will never see you skipping on our sidewalks again," they said. We nodded.

my awesome friends

I have lots of friends. They are Malynda, Raijeana, Sadé, Brooklynn, Moriah, Missy, and Katrina. They're a lot of fun. Brooklynn, Moriah and Missy are in a different class than me though.

The Z Way

I have had 7 pets in my life so far. Their names have always started with z. Their names are Zippy, Zoe, Zena, Ziggy, Zippo, Zues, Zimba. Zippy is a corn snake. Zoe is a White Boxer. She is very lazy. Zena was a brown and black boxer. When I was 7, Zena got cancer. We had to put her down when I was 9. Ziggy was a white and brown bull dog. Lets just say he did not have a great brain. When I was ten, he ran away. Zippo was a stick bug. He was long and looked like a twig. He did when he was 7 months old. That is a long life for a stick bug!

My Snake Zippy

I have a snake named Zippy. He is a corn snake. I have had him since I was 8. My dad used to work for animal control, and one day he found Zippy on the sand by a lake in Anchorage, Ak. He bought him from animal control for 6 dollars! But Zippy is worth a lot more than that.

Zippy eats tiny, dead, and frozen rats every Wednesday. These are called fuzzys. At night he likes to crawl around in his cage, and try to get out. But he never really does!

I love my snake!

Murphy Dome

This Thursday my class went to Murphy Dome. It was very fun. It was a very long bus ride up to Murphy Dome. It was about 45 minutes I would say. But it was okay because most of us brought lots of stuff to do on the bus including tic tac toe and Hangman. We also talked a lot. There was enough seats on the bus so that everyone could have their own seat, but most of us sat with someone else so we would not get bored.

Tree

I think that if were on the top of a tree, I would look around. I would see the way that everything looks. The world would be a piece of art. I would look at the sky and see shadows from the ground and see twigs from trees looking over sized.

Stores would look like wonderlands of colors. Boys and girls running from rack to rack looking for toys. Parents in the food section while stopping to thank employees. Grandmas and grandpas looking at paint for their grandsons and granddaughters new rooms.

Music

I love music. I love listening to it and watching music videos. My favorite songs are Mary's song(Oh My My My), Our Song, Picture To Burn, and Every Rose Has Its Thorn. My favorite artists are Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, Lily Allen, and Akon. My favorite bands are Poison, Gym Class Heroes, Panic, At The Disco, and Fall Out Boy. My family mostly listens to rock, so I am sort of the odd one out when it comes to music. I love that because I can listen to different kinds of music other than what my family listens to.

Tumi the science guy

This is a poem I wrote about our scientist in our class this year!

why why why oh why why why,
why do we call him the science guy.

He teaches us how plants grow,
and how stay alive in the snow.
He teaches us why they go away,
and how they come back another day.

He teaches us why our yard has weeds,
and why certain plants don't have seeds.
Right now he's studying ecology,
and why the tops of mountains have no trees.

We like to plant seeds with him because its fun,
we like to look for leaves with him in the sun.
We wish he'd never say goodbye,
